Is “Raindrop Cake” getting popular in the U.S.A.? As far as I’ve seen, some reactions towards raindrop cake are negative. For example, “It looks like a breast implant.”…. Hopefully it will get more popular.

Shingen Mochi

Raindrop cake is originally from Japan and is called “Mizu Shingen Mochi” in Japanese. But I want you to know about “Shingen Mochi” before “Mizu Shingen Mochi”.
“Shingen” is the name of a famous historical person (His full name is Shingen Takeda and he was a feudal warlord. Wikipedia) and “Mochi” means “rice cake”.  Rice cake with sugar that Shingen took to wars as emergency provisions and Yamanashi prefecture’s traditional cuisine, “abekawa mochi” (rice cake with soybean flour and brown sugar syrup), these are the roots of Shingen Mochi.

Shingen mochi consists of glutinous rice flour, sugar, brown sugar syrup, soybean flour and syrup. I’ve eaten Shingen Mochi several times. It is a bit expensive like about 1.5 dollars, but yummy.

 

Mizu Shingen Mochi (Raindrop cake)

“Mizu” means “water” in Japanese. So Mizu Shingen Mochi is watery shingen Mochi. If you want to buy the original Mizu shingen mochi, you have to go to Yamanashi prefecture. (Shingen Takeda is from Yamanashi prefecture.)

According to officials, Mizu Shingen Mochi is sold at weekends from June to September and usually they are sold out before noon.

The official site has a map but it is written in Japanese. So if you want to go there, ask your Japanese friend, if you have one. I think it’s difficult to go there, unless you are familiar with Japan.

Make Mizu Shingen Mochi by yourself!

You can actually make Mizu Shingen Mochi by yourself. But better ingredients may be used for the original Mizu Shingen Mochi.

*Ingredients*
Water
Granulated Sugar
Agar
Brown Sugar Syrup (kokumitsu)
Soybean Flour (kinako)
*Recipe*
1.Put 12g granulated sugar and 15g agar in a pot, and mix.
2.Add 500cc water little by little, and mix. Repeat it.This is important because agar does not melt easily.
3.Melt agar completely with the boiling hot water.
4.Pour it into the sphere mold.
5.Chill it in a refrigerator.
6.Take out from the model after hardened and put brown sugar syrup and soybean flour.
7.Please eat while feeling the Force.

Warabi mochi

Personally, I recommend “warabi mochi” because this is cheap like 1 dollar. Warabi mochi might be a little bit stickier compared to raindrop cake. You eat it with brown sugar syrup and soybean flour. (same as Shingen Mochi and Mizu Shingen Mochi) If you are in Japan, please try it. I think you can buy it at supermarkets and convenience stores.

Now some Japanese food like “sushi” and “udon” are getting popular worldwide. But personally I think traditional Japanese sweets also should get more attention. An example is “zenzai”.

If you come to Japan, you don’t necessarily need to go to expensive restaurants. Ordinary restaurants serve good meals. When I went to Ginza, Tokyo, I ate “zenzai” which was about 13 dollars. The taste was good and the atmosphere of the restaurant was also very nice. (It was a famous restaurant.) But I wouldn’t go there again because I’m cheap.
